What are acoustic panels?
Acoustic panels are usually made from a sound absorbing foam covered in material. These are permanently fitted to walls or ceilings to provide a level of acoustic control.
How Do Sound Absorption Panels Work?
Sound is caused by vibration. Vibrations coming through the air into your ears cause the eardrum to vibrate and we hear a sound. In an unmodified building, sound vibrations bounce off hard surfaces, such as plaster walls. This means a room with a lot of talking going on, such as a café, has a lot of ambient noise in it from all of those conversations bouncing off hard surfaces in an uncontrolled manner – this is an example of poor acoustics.
Acoustic panels improve this by using acoustic foam which takes unwanted sound vibrations out of the environment.

When to Use Acoustic Panels
There are two primary uses for sound controlling panels in a building:
- Reduce background/ambient noise – such as that in an open plan office, cafeteria or waiting room
- Correct the acoustics of a room – e.g. to give better sound control where quality and direction is important, such as a lecture theatre or stage
What they don’t do is provide sound insulation, i.e. they are not designed to soundproof a room from external noise. Instead, the main function of acoustic panels is to manage improve and manage the sound/noise dynamics within a room.
