The general term ‘acoustic curtains and blankets’ covers a wide range of designs and materials. They are constructed in different ways and used for lots of different applications. The only thing they have in common is that all acoustic curtains and blankets are used for some form of noise control or noise reduction.
In this article, we’ll explore the different types of acoustic curtains and blankets. We’ll also look at the main uses of these highly versatile noise reduction products.
The three main types and their uses
You’ll find many different brands and types of acoustic curtains and blankets available on the market. For simplicity, they can be split into these three main categories:
1. Heavyweight wool serge acoustic curtains
These are most like conventional curtains, in that you can hang them from a standard curtain track. They are usually made of 100% pure new wool – and you can open and close them, just like regular curtains.
Wool serge acoustic curtains are designed exclusively for indoor use. They can help to improve the acoustics in rooms, offices or performing spaces. They do this by reducing the annoying reverberation caused by sound bouncing around hard walls, floors and ceilings. But these types of acoustic curtains won’t stop noise transfer between one area and another.
Robust wool serge is particularly effective at absorbing mid- and high frequency sound. You can sew it into normal curtain fabrics as a noise reduction lining, too.

2. Quilted studio blankets
These acoustic blankets have a highly absorbent core containing 25mm thick noise insulation core. Often used on internal walls, quilted studio blankets look good, too.
They are available as a Class 1 fire rating as standard with the option of a class 0 fire rating. Other optional finishes include waterproofing.

Acoustic blankets
